What decides the payout on a sports bet

Three things fix a sports bet: the price at the moment of acceptance, the stake and the settlement rule of the market. A price that moves after acceptance does not change your slip.
Worked example
₦3,500 at 2.35 returns ₦3,500 × 2.35 = ₦8,225 if it wins: the ₦3,500 stake plus ₦4,725 profit. A loss costs the ₦3,500, and a void result returns it.
Fractional and American prices
Tipsters and some sites quote other formats, and converting them to decimal before comparing avoids mistakes. A fractional 6/4 means 6 units of profit for every 4 staked, which is 6 ÷ 4 + 1 = 2.50 in decimal. American +150 means 150 profit on a 100 stake, also 2.50. American −200 means staking 200 to make 100 profit, or 1.50 in decimal.
Types of bet and how each one settles
The types of bet differ in how many selections they hold and how much one wrong pick costs.
Single bet
A single bet is one selection with one stake. Its price carries one margin and it settles on one result, so a record of singles shows plainly whether your prices beat the market over time.
Accumulator
Worked example
An accumulator links several selections and multiplies their odds. Three legs at 1.40, 1.75 and 2.20 give 1.40 × 1.75 × 2.20 = 5.39, so ₦1,800 returns ₦1,800 × 5.39 = ₦9,702 if all three win. One losing leg loses all ₦1,800. When a leg is voided, sportsbooks usually remove it and multiply the remaining odds, but the exact rule sits in each operator’s terms.
Trixie and other system bets
Worked example
A trixie covers three selections with four bets: three doubles and one treble. At ₦400 a line the slip costs ₦1,600. With the same legs at 1.40, 1.75 and 2.20, if all three win the slip returns ₦980 + ₦1,232 + ₦1,540 + ₦2,156 = ₦5,908. If the 1.75 leg loses, only the 1.40 × 2.20 double pays: ₦400 × 3.08 = ₦1,232, which is ₦368 less than the ₦1,600 staked. A system bet reduces what one wrong pick costs by charging several stakes up front.
Outright bets
An outright is a bet on the winner of a league, tournament or season award. It settles only at the end, so the stake is tied up for weeks or months. Markets with many runners often carry a larger total margin than a two- or three-way match market.
Handicaps and totals
A handicap adds or removes goals or points before settlement, and a total asks whether the score goes over or under a line. Both behave differently on whole, half and quarter lines; our walk-through of goal lines and quarter handicaps shows each case with naira figures.
Pre-match and in-play
Pre-match prices are set before the start and move with team news and money placed. In-play prices change during the event; markets are often suspended after a goal or a break point, and a slip may be rejected or re-priced if the odds move before acceptance. Live pictures or data on your phone can run seconds behind the real action, so a price that looks stale may already be gone.
How a sportsbook builds a price
Each price is the bookmaker’s probability for an outcome with a margin added. Take a two-way tennis match at 1.83 and 1.95. Converted with 1 ÷ odds, those are 54.6% and 51.3%, together 105.9%: about 5.9 points of margin built into the two prices. To see a fair price, divide each share by the total: 54.6 ÷ 105.9 = 51.6%, which is 1 ÷ 0.516 ≈ 1.94 instead of 1.83.
In sportsbook betting, comparing that total between sportsbooks takes a minute and pays back on every slip. The same match at 1.90 and 2.00 adds up to 52.6% + 50.0% = 102.6%: ₦5,000 on the favourite returns ₦9,500 instead of ₦9,150.
Sports betting in Nigeria: naira, rules and limits

Online sports betting in Nigeria runs in naira through bank transfer, USSD, cards and mobile wallets. Since the Supreme Court judgment of November 2024, licensing is mainly a state matter, so read our state-by-state licensing explainer before judging the licence a site names.

- A weekly budget set in naira before the fixtures start; our notes on keeping betting within a budget cover limits and where to get help.
Sport betting on 1win.ng: what to confirm yourself
The 1win sportsbook was outside the scope of our 08.10.2026 visit to 1win.ng, which covered the account, cashier and casino screens. What we did see on the site: “Sports” in the bottom navigation bar and a main menu listing Sports, Trading and Poker. On 13.10.2026 we ran the implied-probability sum from above on two Champions League 1X2 prices in the 1win sportsbook; this is our own arithmetic from two matches on 13.10, not an average. Lens v Sporting CP at 2.54 / 3.75 / 2.61 gives 39.4% + 26.7% + 38.3% = 104.4%, a margin of about 4.4%, and Arsenal v Lille at 1.21 / 6.6 / 14.0 gives 82.6% + 15.2% + 7.1% = 104.9%, about 4.9%.
Where to read the betting rules
Before your first sports betting slip there, look in the Sports section and the 1win Terms for the rules on void legs, postponed events and minimum stakes, and compare them with the general accumulator and void rules on this page. The cashier lists local wallets, bank transfer, USSD and cards; our page on making a 1win deposit covers the steps, and the withdrawal form opens only after identity verification.

FAQ
Can I cancel a sports bet after it is accepted?
Generally no, an accepted bet stands at the agreed price. Some bookmakers offer a cash-out at a new, lower price, and whether a site does is shown on its open bets.
What is the difference between a sportsbook and a betting exchange?
A sportsbook sets the prices and takes the other side of your bet. An exchange matches bettors against each other and charges a commission on winnings.
What is a dead heat?
A dead heat is a tie for a place that pays one winner, such as a joint top scorer. The stake is usually split: ₦2,000 at 6.00 in a two-way dead heat is paid as ₦1,000 × 6.00 = ₦6,000, and the other ₦1,000 is lost.
Does a tennis retirement void my bet?
It depends on the bookmaker's tennis rules. Some void match bets when a player retires, others settle them if a set or a certain point of the match was completed.
Is a sports bet at higher odds better value?
No, higher odds only mean a lower implied chance. Value comes from a price above your own honest estimate of the probability.
How many selections should an accumulator have?
There is no correct number, but each added leg lowers the chance that the slip wins. A double carries two margins, a five-fold carries five.
